Vis Com 1- Planes of Fame

Planes are cool. I got no beef with them. I really tried to incorporate more of my observational triangulation power into getting the perspective correct. Oddly enough i found the Axis WW2 planes slightly more interesting to draw. Although the Allies do have better bombshells.

And that is the last of the stuff i care to share from my 1st CDA experience The next few post I’ll be following up on some of the unfinished assignments as well as posting some figure drawing stuff to fill the gaps. Stay tuned!

Vis Com 1- Cars Redesign

I definitely, seriously, so badly, want to revisit these designs.

1st drawing i wanted to a egyptian sphinx inspired 1930 roadster (hinted in the scribbles of the post before this). As prescribed by my earlier critiques. The paws-fender was inspired by a Catwoman toy I got at McDonalds in the 90’s. And i just wanted to adore it with egyptian stuff and watch Mummies Alive (points if you remember that show).

2nd drawing is a combo of a skateboard and a 1920’s prohibition era bootleggers roadster. I like the idea of bootleggers using ethanol alcohol motorized boards to get away from coppers! Capone would have loved it.

At this point in the class the day job to CDA ratio was thrown out of whack A lot less drawing out of the gate after this point :( But i did have time to follow thru on this drawing of a P-50 Mustang.

The Critique: Watch the the perspective of the wings. Use triangulation to guesstimate the length of the wings.

I had a lot more fun with this next one.The Dung Buggy: It’s like a Power-Wheels for kids but inspired by a Scarab (Dung) Beetle. The motorized beetle sits in the back (like a mid-engine VW bettle) with the back legs acting like suspensions as a kid runs inside the giant hamster (dung) ball.

The critique: Show more of the functionality since its a fun idea. Create other models for different terrain, different bugs, etc. I want to revisit this idea eventually…

For the final designs of my Insect re-design project i initially decided to stick with the impractical fashion approach. Starting off with lobster jacket thing. I didn’t really think this one thru and as a result the class critically tore it apart.

The critique: The design + function was not pushed far enough; it just looks like a cheap costume. It would be cool it was a functional exoskeleton, like a symbiotic giant crab that wraps around you. And the doodle on the side need to be fleshed out into readable thumbnails.

These Redesign assignments are the best! Prompt: Take inspiration from the sketch studies and recreate anything! I have a lot of fun with these things and I get a lot of great critiques.

The idea for this one is a PETA= proof Cactus coat based on the cactus at the LA Arboretum. (I just really like impractical/ funny/uncomfortable ideas. You’ll see that a lot on this page).

The drawing at the bottom is a living plant lawn chair + sunshade. The idea is that leaf constantly moves to follow the sun, for optimal shade.

This little guy is also inspired by the cactus and Pokémon. I wanted to make a plant based pet that was, well, un-pet-able. Using a venus flytrap, a cactus, and a dog. The idea is that is is an ideal pet because the only maintenance is a little bit of water and sunshine.

The last one is living armor inspired by the bamboo forest and tribal cultures. The idea is that any damage to the armor just regrows.

The critique: Show more of my thought process instead of just going straight for the kill on multiple ideas. Illustrate more of the functions of the redesign.

Hey people. Long time no post; Animation production keeps me pretty busy…But not busy enough to stop me from drawing!!! I recently started taking the CDA (concept design academy) class Vis Com 1 with Patrick Ballesteros! The instruction and homework has been improve my drawings. I’ll be using my feed to share my homework.

Above ↑ are sketches from the LA Arboretum. The goal was to learn how to breakdown and texture plants. The Cacti were my favorite things to draw there!

The original sketch for Cooking in the Sixth Dimension. I wanted to have Wes dangling over the cauldron to be ironic since this cartoon started off as a ‘thank you’ to him for making this totally bad-ass piñata for my birthday party.

Breaking this open was the hardest fucking thing to do…I still have the pieces in my house.

I really like Wes’ designs and I’ll definitely be coming back to them in other cartoons (possible team-up?)
